At an altitude of 940 m, near the border of Greece with Albania, is Pirgos. It is a mountain village in the west of the river Sarandaporos at the point where it joins Vourkopotamos river. It is 88 km north of Ioannina and 25.5 km from Konitsa.
To reach the village, you will head to the Konitsa-Kozani National Road and shortly after the Lazaridou bridge, at the point where the Sarandaporos valley joins that of Vourkopotamos, you will follow the 6 km long asphalt road.
The old name of the village is Stratsiani. Today, the village has few inhabitants and their main occupation is construction work. Walking in the alleys of the village, you will see the old stone mansions and the ruined houses, reminiscent of the good old days as well as the wealth of the village. The churches of the village, Agia Paraskevi, Panagia as well as its central church, Agios Georgios are special.
Do not miss to visit the school of the village, which hosts a photo exhibition with themes from the past of the wider area. Every August (15/8) a traditional festival is organized in the village square.
